Christmas in the Philippines

Page history last edited by 6yf 10 years, 4 months ago

Maligayang Pasko! Merry Christmas!

Clothing

Clothing people wear is usually very traditional during the Christmas season. They wear clothes that are festive but make them feel good! (Basically dresses or dress clothing, but most clothing just makes them feel good during the season!)

Food

  • Tsokolate hot chocolate; a drink enjoyed by most Filipinos
  • Salabat warm ginger tea; traditional drink after early morning mass
  • puto  bumbong purple-colored rice treat cooked in upright bamboo trees
  • bibinka flat cake served on banana leaves and served with a pat of butter and grated coconut
  • ensaymada a soft, fluffly pastry topped with finely grated cheese and white sugar
  • leche flan (milk custard) velvety custard made with egg yolks; has a rich, caramelized topping
  • imported keso de bola ball of Edam cheese usually with a red covering
  • macacroni salad (prepared with Lady's choice of mayonaise) Filipinos consider it stylish and classy to serve western foods
  • friut salad almost always served with a mix of sweet condensed milk and cream
  • roasted kastanyas piping-hot chestnuts
  • hamon (jamon dulce) sweet-cured christmas ham
  • Lechon or litson whole suckling pig, roasted

Traditions

  •  People usually go to church called 'Simbang Gabi'. Simbang Gabi in English is called Rooster's Mass because it starts at 3a.m and ends at 5a.m.

  • They also have the 'parol' which is a bamboo pole or frame with a lighted star lantern on it. It's traditionally made from bamboo strips and colored Japanese paper or cellophane paper and represents the star that guided the Wise Men. It is the most popular Christmas decoration in the Philippines.

Music

  • Many music exist in the Philippines. A traditional song in the Philippines is called Pasko Na Naman. This song originally means " Its Christmas Again"  and features an upbeat, fast paced tempo that you can't help but dance to. The song basically talks about how its Christmas already, its relatable to everyone, and the words are easy to remember.

Music is very popular during most festivals everywhere.

  • Many songs that exist have different meanings. Some may help others, some are just for festivals.
